I was just reading a piece done in my local paper in cooperation with our local Worksource office on improving chances of landing a job. They list the obvious things like preparing a resume and dressing for success and being confident. I’m here to tell you it’s all bullshit. I have interviewed for several companies and they all suggest the same thing:
Find someone you can mold to your needs and that will fit in and play nice.
Last August I interviewed a hundred applicants for an entry level minimum wage job. I didn’t hire the most experienced or the person ( I remember her ) with the neatest application and resume (it was bound, no lie).
I hired 40 people based on a few things. These are:
Whether I like you the minute I met you. Now, that’s not entirely true. You have about 3 minutes. I was doing interviews - maybe 1 every 10 minutes. Not long to sell yourself. I was calling names in a lobby and moving to a seperate room. I remember calling a name and seeing this tall goofy looking kid stand up. The voice in my head knee-jerked “oh hell, here we go”. A notch over six feet tall, long hair in one of those hippy beanie things and board shorts. He might have even been wearing sandals. No work history.
I hired him. In the three minutes he showed me that he had a radiant personality that my customers were going (and do!) love.
Oh, while I’m thinking of it. Don’t let mistakes in your past stand in your way. I’ve been fired from a job. I have hired felons. Remember that we can all change and what is most important is that we learn from our mistakes. Know this and do not let it stop you from moving forward.
I let being fired hold me back for about three years until I realized that being fired only meant that I didn’t fit with that company. Not to mention the reason for my dismissal was so petty that my General Manager and District Manager later left the company due to the incident. I still thought that putting that on my application would prevent me from getting work. I started to concentrate on what I had accomplished at that job and used those successes to move past the one dark spot of my career.
Okay, I’m done for a while. Want more help? Have questions? Write me. I’m not interviewing you so I promise to be 100% honest and help you land the job. I’m very good at what I do. Really; people tell me so! =)
